On 15 September, Liang Wan will give a public lecture at Fudan titled “A Medical Team That Will Never Leave: Chinese Medical Aid Teams and Socialist Medicine in Africa”. Drawing on Chinese and Tanzanian archives, internal reports of the medical teams, and fieldwork in Tanzania, the lecture examines how the rural-oriented model of care developed in Maoist China was carried to Tanzania from the 1960s through mobile clinics, acupuncture, and the training of local health workers, and why its commitment to medical self-reliance proved difficult to sustain. The lecture is given in Chinese.
